84년 전, 인촌 김성수 선생이 마하트마 간디(Mahatma Gandhi·1869~1948)에게 보낸 편지를 최근 찾았습니다.
인촌 선생은 동아일보 사장 시절인 1926년 10월 12일 간디에게 ‘조선을 위한 고언(苦言)’을 구하는 편지를 보냈습니다.

편지의 요지는 아래와 같습니다.
경애하는 간디 선생님,
조선의 민족지 동아일보를 대표하여 당신은 인도뿐 아니라 조선에서도 가장 존경받은 지도자라고 말씀드립니다. 왜냐하면 당신은 우리 조선민족에게 희망과 용기를 북돋워 주기 때문입니다. 과거 17세기 동안 두 역사 깊은 민족 사이에 존재해온 문화적 관계를 생각할 때 조선민족이 당신이 받드는 ‘사랑’의 민족과 진심어린 동지애를 나누는 것은 자연스러운 일일 것입니다. 인도는 우리 속에 살아있습니다.
당신의 명성이 특히 젊은 세대들에게 높이 있음은 커다란 기쁨입니다.
네 가지 맹세와 함께 간디라는 이름은 우리가 가장 소중하게 생각하는 우리의 보석입니다. 우리에게 당신은 이방인이 아니라 우리 모두가 사랑하는 지도자입니다. 당신이 성공하면 우리는 기쁨을 나누고, 당신이 실패하면 우리는 슬픔을 느낍니다. 세상의 정의가 당신을 지지하기 때문에 당신의 이상이 실현되리라는 것을 우리는 확신합니다.
동아일보는 1919년 조선독립운동 직후 시작됐고, 당신도 상상할 수 있듯 숱한 어려움과 고난, 역경과 싸우면서 민족주의적 이상에 충실하려 합니다. 중요한 전환점에 선 조선을 위해 새로운 일들을 시작하려는 우리가 추구해야 할 가치에 대해 선지자(先知者) 당신의 고언(苦言)을 청합니다.

Dear Mr. Gandhi,
I, representing the Dong-A Ilbo, the Korean nation-
alist daily newspaper, take the liberty of addressing you who
are not only the most honoured leader of the Indian nation,
but also our own, for you have inspired us, the Korean people,
with hope and courage to follow after you; especially con-
sidering the cultural relationship which has existed between
these two ancient nations since the past seventeen centuries,
it is natural that the Korean People cherishes the most sincere
fellow-feeling with the people of "Love" for whose deliverance
you stand. India lives in our veins.
It is a great joy to me to say that your name and
especially among the young generation. The name Gandhi, along
with his four principles, is our jewel which is most treasured
by us. To us you are not a stranger, you are our own beloved
leader. Whenever you succeed, we share the joy; failed, the
sorrow. And we are ever sure that your ideal shall be realized
for the righteous of the world are backing you up.
As to the Dong-A Ilbo which I represent, it will
suffice to say that it was started just after the Korean In-
dependence Movement of 1919, and has been true to its nation-
alist ideal, ever struggling with, as you may well imagine,
innumerable hardships and handicaps through hundreds of sup-
pressions.
Now that Korea is at one of her most important turn-
ing points, and is very likely to begin a new activity, we
feel it necessary to consult you, a most able and experienced
leader, as to which course we ought to pursue at this critical
moment. This is why we dare ask you for a message to the
Korean people, which shall be translated and published in our
paper. If you could send an autographed portrait to be published
together with your message, it would intensify the inspiration
of your message.
Although I know well that you are very busy, I am
sure that you will not reject this sincere and humble request
of mine made on behalf of us, the Korean people.
Believe me, dear Mr. Gandhi,
your most devout follower.

1927년 1월 5일자 2면에 실린 간디의 메세지는 인촌 선생이 보낸 이 편지에 대한 답신이었습니다.
“사랑하는 친구여
주신 편지는 받았나이다. 내가 보낼 유일한 부탁은 절대적으로 참되고 ‘무저항적’인 수단으로 조선이 조선의 것이 되기를 바란다는 것뿐입니다.

간디 옹(翁)이 우리와 특히 가깝게 느껴지는 것도 83년 전 동아일보에 실린 ‘조선이 조선의 것이 되기를 바란다’ 는 이 메세지 덕분일 것입니다.
동아일보사의 2020위원회가 이 편지를 찾는 데는 판카즈 모한 한국학중앙연구원 교수의 도움이 컸습니다. 모한 교수는 인도에 있는 지인들에게 부탁, 그 중 한 사람이 간디 관련 연구와 출판을 담당하는 독일의 간디기념재단이 이 편지를 홈페이지를 통해 전 세계에 서비스하고 있다는 사실을 알려주었습니다. 모한 교수는 타고르의 시 ‘동방의 등불’을 보고 ‘동방의 등불’을 찾아 한국으로 유학와 한국고대사를 전공했답니다.
